Chilli Con Carne

Chilli Con Carne is a delicious dish that you can make on the cheap. Perfect for feeding a large group if you have visitors. Chilli  Con Carne is a dish most people know, loved by students and single guys because it’s so cheap and easy to make.
I thought chilli was a Brazilian dish but I’ve discovered that it actually has its origins in Texas USA. There are so many things you can do to make this dish your own. You can experiment with different beans, chillies, bacon or whatever you like. Why not try it my way?
A dollop of sour cream brings a whole new dimension to the dish, a lifesaver if you’ve overdone it with the chillies!

Chilli Con Carne

Total Time: 2 hours, 30 minutes

Chilli Con Carne


1 kg Beef Mince

2 can of Kidney beans

1 can of sweetcorn

2 can of chopped Tomatoes

2 Onions -Chopped

4 cloves of  garlic - Crushed

Ginger    - Crushed

1 tbsp Cayenne Pepper 

1tsp Cumin Powder

2 tbsp oil

Salt to taste


1 stick Celery -Chopped

Bay Leaves


  1. Heat some oil in a big pot and add the chopped onions and bay leaves. When the onions are softened add the chopped celery and cook for few minutes then add the mince meat, salt, cayenne pepper and allow to brown.
  2. Add ginger, garlic and thyme and cook for few more minutes then add the kidney beans and chopped tomatoes and cook for around 30 minutes.
  3. After 30 minutes add the sweetcorn (if using) then cook for 2 more hrs on a low heat or as long as you can. The chilli will cook in about 45 minutes if you're in a hurry but cooking it for longer enhances the flavour. It tastes even better the day after!
