New Year Resolution
It’s a new year and no doubt if you’re reading this you are repenting of your over indulgence from the Christmas period and making promises for a better you. Exercise, get a new job, find love, socialise more, socialise less, read more, do a course, play an instrument, learn martial arts, travel the world or just give up sugar in your tea, any of these sound familiar to you? What about ‘detox‘? That’s the big one these days. Everyone wants to detox and somehow purge their body over a few days from all the badness and toxins they’ve stored up over a season of excess.
Diets and detox’s, we’ve got to change our thinking people. It’s a lifestyle change that’s needed not a quick fix. For healthy digestion and detoxification, we need a full range of nutrients which obtained from a varied and balanced diet, not a 3-day detox program. By choosing food and drinks that aid the digestive system rather than overloading it, you can reduce the demands on your liver. You can start supporting your liver by ensuring there is plenty of fibre in your diet.
The fibre in your diet keeps your gut moving and more importantly, it binds onto toxins in the gut and escorts them out of the body. A regular bowel movement is almost as important to your health as the food you put in your mouth. A regular bowel movement means you are eliminating waste products efficiently. There’s also the added benefit of having a few minutes to hide away from the world and catch up on your emails or perhaps read your favourite blog? 😉
Antioxidants are another important group of nutrients for liver detoxification. The body has its own method of ‘mopping up” oxidants, but we need to provide a good supply of nutrients to keep them well in check.

Turmeric and it’s anti-inflammatory properties can be an effective treatment for (IBS) inflammatory Bowel Disease. Turmeric is also used to relieve Rheumatoid Arthritis. Curcumin in turmeric is an antioxidant that enables it to protect the colon cells from free radicals. Curcumin may also prevent Alzheimer’s Disease and Lowers Cholesterol. When it comes to digestion and detoxification turmeric and ginger are both treasures. Recent studies have shown that in addition to its anti-oxidant properties turmeric may boost your detoxification system.
Pineapple has essential digestive enzymes, and ginger has been found to reduce the symptoms of dysmenorrhea (severe pain during a menstrual cycle). Ginger like Turmeric also reduces inflammation. All this being said, we should not forget that the number 1 detox is to simply be outside in the sunlight for 15 minutes or more and absorb all the Vit D3 that you can. Number 2 is exercising, exercise outside and kill two birds with one stone! Happy New Year and Happy New You!
